From Student to Stage Crew: Imi Wright’s Glastonbury Moment
From watching Glastonbury on TV with her dad as a child to standing on the Pyramid Stage with Pulp, BIMM Music Institute student Imi Wright has come full circle – and then some. Thanks to a connection made at a BIMM masterclass, she landed a role working behind the scenes on one of the world’s most iconic stages.
In this exclusive interview, she reflects on the unforgettable experience, the lessons she’s taking forward, and how her time at BIMM helped prepare her for the moment of a lifetime.
What was it like being part of the production office team for one of the most iconic stages in the world?
‘It was honestly surreal. I don’t think I will ever find the words to truly describe how grateful I am for this experience. Glastonbury is one I have grown up watching on TV with my dad from a young age, so to be offered a role at the festival was just incredible, but to be working on the Pyramid Stage? That was just a dream come true.’
What was the environment like? And how did BIMM prepare you for working in this kind of situation?
‘Every day proved to be fast-paced and demanding, particularly show days, and presented unexpected challenges that required immediate solutions. The environment was also highly collaborative, with good communication being instrumental to the smooth running of such a large-scale operation. Whilst I have been exposed to similar environments in other live events I have worked at, Glastonbury is incomparable to anything I have ever witnessed.
My time at BIMM really helped prepare me for high-pressure environments like this. Throughout my course and my work with BIMM, I was encouraged to take initiative and develop strong problem-solving skills. Having access to tutors who are active music industry professionals gave me invaluable insight and support as I learned how to navigate different areas of the industry. The staff are what make BIMM so special, I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am today without them.’
How did you find out about the opportunity?
‘I discovered the opportunity through a BIMM masterclass held in October last year. Emma Reynolds-Taylor, Head of Production at Glastonbury, joined us to share insights into her career in event production and answer our questions. After the session, I spoke with her about my own work in the industry and thanked her for being such an inspiring female figure. A few months later, she got in touch directly to offer me a role on her team at Glastonbury.’
Were there any standout moments from your time at Glastonbury that really stuck with you, whether professionally or personally?
‘Two moments really stood out for me during my time at Glastonbury.
The first was simply being part of such an incredible team. I was nervous going into the role – after all, the Pyramid Stage is one of the most prestigious and recognisable stages in the world, and I worried I might be out of my depth. But the Pyramid Production team were so welcoming and supportive. They helped me handle artist and crew enquiries and even celebrated with me when I received my final project grade while on site.
Working in the music industry is very different from a typical 9–5 job. At festivals, your colleagues become your community – you work together, eat together, and spend your downtime together. Building strong connections is essential, I am so lucky to have worked with such an incredible team for that month. I hope that I can work with a team as cohesive as that in all my roles.
The second standout moment was going onstage with Pulp at the start of their set. On the Saturday morning, I was told we’d be helping with something on the Pyramid Stage later that day. It wasn’t until later that I found out we’d be walking on stage, dressed in black and white ponchos, to reveal the band during their secret set. As we queued backstage, Pulp walked past us – and I was honestly a bit starstruck! But nothing compares to the feeling of standing on the front of the Pyramid Stage, looking out at thousands of people. It’s something I’ll never forget.’
What did you learn from working at a festival on this scale that you’ll take forward into your future career?
‘The first was adaptability – tasks changed constantly, and being able to step in and support different areas of the Production Office proved invaluable. The second was the importance of clear, effective communication. I do not think I can stress how important this point is; whether it is communication between your team or yourself and artist teams, it is crucial when running such large-scale operations.’
For other students hoping to work at events like Glastonbury, what advice would you give based on your experience?
‘Say yes to every opportunity! Even if you are hesitant, your team will understand, as we were all once in your position. Smaller opportunities have led to larger opportunities, just like this did for me. When working, do not be afraid to speak to your team. Ask questions, offer help, and get to know your team, as you will be working so closely alongside them in some very intense environments. And most importantly – enjoy it! Have fun and make the most of every moment.’
Can you provide us with a quote that sums up the whole experience?
‘Glastonbury was more than a job – it was a surreal and unforgettable experience that I will always be grateful for.’
